Weathering the storm in Cuba

Stuck in the restaurant!

Trapped in the restaurant…

The following are notes I made during a memorably rainy night in Cuba, October 2014. My attempts to miss the wet season on this trip failed miserably, but it made it more of an adventure. The notes below have not been edited since I scribbled them at the time, determined to capture the feeling for posterity.

I have never in my life seen, let alone been out in, rain like that!

We went out for dinner in a really eccentric restaurant in the old part of town, in one of the oldest houses in Trinidad which has been renovated and turned into a restaurant. Anyway, it’s been raining on and off for days, and while we were in there the heavens just opened. Stair rods of water which I could feel 8 feet away from the window; the road outside was cobbled and on a hill, and it literally turned into a river.

We waited at the restaurant for ages before leaving, until the rain eased a bit. But it was really more a case of giving up because it clearly wasn’t going to stop any time soon, and the torrential rain picked up again not long after we left.

The coach dropped us off near our casa particular, but we volunteered to walk the last bit rather than cause problems for the coach which might not have been able to turn round. The road was still awash near us; we had to wade across the junction which was flowing quite fast and my flip flop nearly came off in the current.

Anyway, made it home in the end, but it was a real adventure! Fortunately I had (more or less deliberately) gone out in a denim miniskirt & flip flops, so with a poncho covering my clothes and bag it was only my skin that got wet. The others had trousers etc and were saturated!

Off to bed now to see in the morning if our trip to the mountains is still going ahead…

  1. I remember that night! The dinner was great but the rain was epic. The walk in the forest next day was curtailed but exciting. We timed that trip well, before the Americans got friendly!
